Prior to his move to join the Cadillac F1 team, Sergio Perez was linked with a switch to the Alpine outfit. The Mexican driver has now clarified why he opted to join the American team instead of the Enstone-based squad.
The Formula 1 scene has been abuzz following the announcement that Perez and Valtteri Bottas, both drivers who were without a seat on the grid for the 2025 campaign, will make their return with the Fisher-based outfit ahead of the sweeping regulation changes set to reshape the sport in 2026.
During their official unveiling, Perez spoke to the media, including GPblog, about his decision to join Cadillac instead of Alpine. The Mexican revealed that the choice was driven by his desire to rediscover his passion for racing.
“Well, for me, it's very clear, you know, coming back to Formula 1, my main target is to enjoy it again."
"I had a very difficult year, especially my final season with Red Bull. This is a sport I love, and I want to get back to enjoying it. This project brings that excitement back because I'm able to put all my years of experience and the knowledge from different teams I’ve worked with to help this team move forward.”
The former Red Bull Racing driver also expressed confidence in Cadillac’s long-term vision. Perez emphasised the team’s determination to progress quickly.
“We want to move forward as quickly as possible. We know we don't have time on our side, but we can also be a big surprise because, with the drivers, we're bringing as much experience as possible, but also commitment."
"And this is the same for all areas in the team. It's a new team, but there’s plenty of experience in the engineering department, mechanics, everyone has a lot of experience in the sport. So I definitely believe in the project and that we can move forward quickly.”
