According to Martin Brundle the Turn 1 tussle with Max Verstappen cost Lando Norris the win. McLaren team principal Andrea Stella agrees with the former F1 driver.
With Max Verstappen going wide at Turn 1, Lando Norris saw a gap and immediately pounced, something Stella believes was not the right move, in conversation with Sky Sports.
Stella thinks Norris could've got Verstappen later on for the lead
"The first lap, with hindsight, it would have potentially wiser for Lando to lift and accept he would have gained the lead later on in the race because the car was fast enough but that's with the benefit of hindsight."
Later on in the race, after Norris had made his way back up to Verstappen, the two again were locked in a hard fight for P2, and at one point, the McLaren driver went for a risky move up the inside which drove both carss off the track on the exit of Turn 11.
Despite having gained the place, Norris had done so off the track, which meant he had to give it back.
"In terms of giving back the position, I think that was the right thing to do because Lando, in our judgement, was outside the track limits and you have to give back the track position."
"That's a little bit of bad luck but you have to behave and behave fairly. That could have been a risk of a penalty so it was the right thing to do."
