After the Max Verstappen/ George Russell collision at the Spanish Grand Prix, Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner shared his perspective on what he feels could be done moving forward regarding racing rules. The Barcelona-based race had lots of excitement after Verstappen was told to give the position back to Russell and then the two collided. After everything was said and done, Horner was asked how he thinks F1 could make the racing rule more clear.
Horner on racing rules from the FIA
He said, “What would be great is if the race director in that situation takes responsibility and says either effectively play on or you've taken advantage, you need to give up the advantage. That then gives the team a choice.”
During the race, the call was made for Verstappen to give his position back to Russell. Verstappen argued that Russell was the one who pushed him off the track (i.e. making it not an advantage). However, he was still recommended to swap with the Mercedes driver.
It was after the race that the stewards released their decision regarding the off-track advantage, but by that time, the damage had been done.
Horner continued, “We're trying to second-guess what the Stewards may or may not think is partly difficult in the midst of it.”
When reminded that the FIA have not done that to discourage teams taking 50-50 chances, Horner rebutted, “But they're doing that. That's exactly what they've got.”
He also weighed in on the lack of response from the higher-ups.
“It's something to be more engaging. It's something in the SAC (Sporting Advisory Committee) that should be discussed.“
