Despite it not being a Formula 1 race weekend, Max Verstappen had several F1 fans buzzing as he claimed victory on his competitive GT3 debut outing at the Nurburgring. Here’s how many fans tuned in to watch him.
The Dutch driver, who was driving the Ferrari 296 GT3 car for the Emil Frey Racing team, attracted several fans to the Nurburgring event.
Aside from the thousands who were present at the 'Green Hell' to witness the four-time F1 champion hit the track, millions of others also tuned in from around the world to watch Verstappen.
The Auto Addiction YouTube channel, which was one of the many platforms showing Race 9 of NLS, featured streams that grossed over three million viewers: 2.4 million from its English stream and an additional 1.3 million from its German stream.
The Nurburgring official channel also had a strong audience, as fans tuned in to watch the Nurburgring Langstrecken-Serie. The channel recorded 453K English viewers and 498K German viewers.
Sky Sports F1 also streamed the race on YouTube, with its English broadcast clocking 162,591 live viewers. Its German version streamed the race on its app, though its live stream figures could not be ascertained at this point.
In total, fans in excess of 4,813,591 watched Verstappen on YouTube as he tackled the Nurburgring.
Verstappen’s race saw him make a mark on endurance racing at the Nurburgring. Aside from clinching victory with a margin of over 20 seconds, the Dutchman, alongside teammate Chris Lulham, became the first debutants to claim victory.
Verstappen stormed into the lead on the opening lap. The Red Bull Racing driver has received many plaudits for his feat, with veteran driver Frank Stippler, who finished on the podium, labelling him as “the best in the world."
