Max Verstappen's 2023 pole position lap is often looked at as one of the best in recent times, where he beat Fernando Alonso's provisional pole lap time with a superb effort in Sector 3 particularly. His best ever quali lap? The Dutchman himself answers.
Kissing the railing heading into the pool, la Rascasse and Anthony Nogues, Verstappen pushed beyond the foreseeable limits to pip Alonso's efforts in the dying moments of the qualifying session for the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix.
"It was a good one," Verstappen said to media like GPblog at Monaco. "But honestly, around Monaco it's always very tough to say 'that was unbelievable' because you never really feel super comfortable."
Despite the difficulties inherent to the track, the Dutchman's form was elevated to match the high stakes inherent to qualifying in Monaco.
"But at the time in ’23, I knew that I was down in the first two sectors, so I knew I had to risk a bit more. And it worked out well for me."
"It was a cool lap, and of course it meant a lot because it meant that you start first. Normally you win the race if you have a normal start."

"But like I said, normally, and now there’s a lot more that can go wrong with two stops," added the Dutchman regarding the FIA's revamped pitstop rules for the Monaco Grand Prix.
"So, first, let’s see where we qualify and then we’ll see what happens. But for sure, ’23 was a good year and a cool qualifying around here."
