In every great championship battle, there is a driver smiling, and his rival left disappointed. Lewis Hamilton could live both experiences during his long career in Formula One. Mercedes' team principal Toto Wolff explains why the car from the 2021 Abu Dhabi GP is still portrayed at their reception.

Mercedes W12 still on display

After winning his first title in 2008 on the last lap, Lewis Hamilton eventually lost the 2021 title the same way in Abu Dhabi. Still, ahead of that notorious day three years ago, Hamilton could win three straight Grands Prix in Brazil, Qatar and Saudi Arabia to set up a final showdown.
"It's a special car because it's also a car that turned the situation around after Brazil where we thought the championship is gone. It was a very good car after the summer and it's a car that reminds all of us that things could go wrong very quickly," Toto Wolff shared in the High Performance podcast why the car is still at their reception.
"Things could be right also very quickly. It's basically how life goes and that car is a stark reminder of all the joy and all the pain a situation can bring with it," Wolff concluded, explaining why the W12 not hidden after the way the 2021 season finished for the German team.

To remind him it was one of those years where the best car in the field did not win the drivers championship as their driver was beaten by a superior driver from a rival team.
It will be the same scenario again this year, when the Drivers WDC isnt driving the best car in the field.
For Toto, his drivers only wins the drivers championship when the Mercedes is also the constructors champion for that season, confirming that it is indeed the best car for that year.

Toto is keeping that car on display, so that if he does sign Max, he can say: "Look Max, this is the car that you conquered!"

They keep the car because it was the car that won the constructers championship and they not won anything for last coupel years .

LukeF1 12 November 2024 at 13:34+ 2372

"It was the car that won the constructors", yeah well, these cars don't build themselves let me tell you. And to make something so amazing it takes a lot of genius and effort. The cars don't drive themselves either for that matter but I will not go there.

There is no need for slander mate. It was just a strong, beautiful car the team made and they are proud of it.
