Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso stated that he "never lost the trust" of his team, saying he does not feel any more confident than before about the 2026 season after meeting Adrian Newey.
Before the Miami Grand Prix, the Spaniard met with the master designer for the first time at the British team's Silverstone factory after Newey made the move from Red Bull.
The 66-year-old designer started work in March for Aston Martin, with his main focus on their 2026 car despite challenges with this year's machine, taking advantage of the major change in regulations.
Alonso has yet to score a point in 2025, but there is a belief that 2026 will be far more successful for the Spaniard and Aston Martin

Alonso understands that Newey is focused on 2026

Asked by GPblog whether he would wish for Newey to take a look at this year's car amid its struggles, Alonso says it's logical for the designer to focus on long-term development.
"I don't have the expertise or I don't have the experience designing cars as he has, and how much it requires and how much time he needs to dedicate," he says in the Miami paddock.
"I think he would probably prefer even joining the team one year ago and start in ‘26. So even for the 26 project, I'm sure that he thinks it's late," continues Alonso.
The Spaniard also went on to add that Newey has nothing to do with the current car and therefore doesn't think it's his job to solve this year's problems: "I understand completely that he needs to focus only on next year's car, and this year, he didn't make the car, he didn't touch the car, he didn't design the car, so I don't think it's up to him to fix the car."

Meeting Newey did not increase Alonso's confidence

After the much-discussed meeting that recently took place between Alonso and Newey at the Aston Martin factory, Alonso was asked whether that conversation had increased his confidence and trust within the team.
"I think I never lost the trust. I'm not too worried about next year. I think this year is just a continuation of some of the problems that we found in the last two seasons, and we were not able to overcome some of the obstacles that we found.
"For next year, with the new regulations and Adrian on board, I think nothing of this year's car is going to be in next year's project, so it's a complete reset, so I'm not too concerned for next year," continued an excited Alonso.
However, in regard to the rest of the 2025 season, there is not too much confidecne surroudning the 43-year-old.
"For this year, I think the fix is not straightforward, and there's nothing we can do from night to today. I was in the factory, had lunch with Adrian, a couple of talks, but nothing really too much into this year.
"It was more of a general talk about the team in general and how he felt in these first couple of weeks at Aston, and some of the changes that may happen in the team for a better future under his guidance and experience. Yeah, it's always exciting to talk to him and to work with him finally, so it was a very nice day," concluded Alonso.
