Bernie Ecclestone is well-known for his provocative statements which have been known to star a fire or ten. And he has now revealed a comment he once made to McLaren CEO Zak Brown directly.
Bernie Ecclestone was at the head of running Formula 1 for decades. Having started out as a racing driver himself, he decided to take a more managerial role after he found out he couldn't go as quick as he needed to in order to be on par with the F1 legends of his day.
He then turned his attention to leading and guiding Formula 1 into becoming a world champion loved by millions and millions the world over. Without, of course, never losing that sharp tongue he was always known to have.
Recently McLaren CEO Zak Brown, was able to find out first hand how deep it can cut. Speaking with Sport.de, Ecclestone revealed the exchange he had with the American executive.
Referring to McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, Ecclestone called them 'lucky.'
"You can see how lucky these guys are to be in the right team at the right time," he said. "There were certainly some riders who were better than today's, but who never had the chance to show their strengths to anyone."
For the British mogul there's one mastermind behind the McLaren infraestructure, whom, in the words of Ecclestone himself though, isn't 'very talented.'
"Zak Brown is doing a very good job," he continued. "Recently, because I've known him for a long time, I said, 'I don't think you're very talented, but one of your talents is that you choose the right people to work for you.'
"He has the right people around him and he keeps them together. The people at McLaren are doing a good job," Ecclestone concluded.
McLaren currently find themselves in the eye of a self-provoked storm since the team orders that were enforced on Oscar Piastri to let Lando Norris by in a bid to exact fairness and equity among their drivers. This prompted Ecclestone to judge McLaren were aiding Norris' title race.
