Christian Horner, following his demise at Red Bull, has been linked to various F1 teams in rumours in the media. One of these potential destinations has now been descarded in a brutal fashion.
From Ferrari to Cadillac Horner's name has been thrown about in the media, with no regard for the fact that the team principal position in those very teams is already taken.
One team that currently has no team principal per se, is Alpine though. But former F1 driver and current analyst for RTL/Sport.de believes the chances of Horner going there are slim and none.
"Theoretically, this is possible and has been played out in various variants in the press. But whether that's what Horner wants, i.e. continue as team boss, only with a much worse team, I think it's unlikely."
"Horner would like to have a different status than he had at Red Bull. In other words, he wants to become a shareholder in a team and wants to develop politically to other heights, not just take care of the day-to-day racing business and in the end Flavio Briatore decides," Danner believes.
According to the former F1 driver, the lack of said status for Horner is the very reason why the animosity between him and Mercedes team principal, CEO and third-part owner exists.
"This animosity, this aversion that both cherish and cultivate towards each other is already credible.
"And it is certainly based on the fact that Horner was and is not yet at Toto level in one area: he does not own a third of a Formula 1 team."
With Horner's removal, and Laurent Mekies stepping in to fill the Briton's vacated position, Danner believes Red Bull have made a very good choice, not just for the immediate future, he argues.
"I think it's only formally an interim solution. Mekies is a very good choice, a very good solution. He can do it, does it, knows how to do it.
"He is a tidy, technically extremely adept and very experienced man.
"Mekies is not one to be thrown in at the deep end and see if he can swim. I think he's doing a good job and will stay there at least in the medium term."
