Lando Norris spoke Dutch ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, just weeks away from the race weekend. In a video from Android, one of McLaren’s sponsors, Norris was asked to give a shoutout to some of the Dutch fans supporting the McLaren team.
Thousands of Dutch Formula 1 fans are expected to flock to the Zandvoort circuit in the coming weeks.
The dress code is often orange—matching McLaren’s team colors—though the shade differs from the bright orange worn by the current leaders in the constructors’ championship.
"How do I say in Dutch that your T-shirt is the wrong shade of orange," after which the translation comes out. Norris then made a brave attempt to pronounce the sentence correctly.
The presenter said it would be useful if he knew someone who speaks Dutch to teach it to Norris. "Yes," says Norris, after which a significant sparkle appears in his eyes. "I'm going to use that when I get to Zandvoort,"
Norris shared his newly learned Dutch phrase and even asked how to properly pronounce “I'll see you on the paddle court” in Dutch.
As the current number two in the drivers' championship, Norris can learn Dutch not only from Max Verstappen but also from his own mother.
Although he was born in Bristol, his mother, Cisca Wauman, is Belgian, from the Sint-Niklaas region, so Norris has several ways to pick up the language.
The phrase about the paddle court comes in handy when chatting with fellow F1 drivers about their latest rendezvous on the track.
Padel is a favorite pastime among drivers, including Verstappen. During the summer break, he and Jos even spent time on the court hitting some balls.
