It quickly became very apparent that McLaren had the most dominant car. Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris' team is at the top in the constructors' and drivers' championships. Oscar Piastri indicated after the race in Miami that their focus should not shift too early to next year's car.

Not a big enough advantage

Entering every race weekend, McLaren is clearly seen as the favourite. Last weekend, they dominated the rest of the field, with George Russell, who came in third, finishing 37 seconds behind race winner Oscar Piastri.
About the development of the 2026 car, Piastri said to GPblog and others, "I don’t know. There are a lot of other smarter people than me who calculate when it’s time to switch to the next year. Clearly, we do have a strong advantage at the moment, but not every weekend has looked like this."
"In Saudi [Arabia] last weekend, our competition was very close, and we didn’t have it that comfortably. This weekend, a very different story, but I don’t expect every weekend to look like this. We have the advantage everywhere we go. Sometimes it’s a little, sometimes a lot. Clearly, in this position now, we have a lot of focus on next year. We want to make sure we win both championships this year and put ourselves in a good spot for next year."
Piastri is in first place in the championship and is riding a wave of momentum. The Australian has won four of the first six races and is sixteen points ahead of teammate Lando Norris. In the constructors' standings, McLaren is 105 points ahead of second-place Mercedes, with a total of 246 points.
