Red Bull technical director Pierre Wachè attempted to analyse the areas in which he believes the competition currently has the edge over the RB22.

RB22 weaknesses laid bare as Red Bull boss compares rivals

On the final day of testing in Bahrain, the Frenchman pushed back against Toto Wolff’s remarks after the Mercedes boss had labelled the RB22 as the current benchmark, arguing instead that Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar’s new car is not the reference point many claim it to be — placing Mercedes, Ferrari and McLaren ahead at this stage.

Asked where he believes the RB22 falls short compared to those cars, Wachè told GPblog among other media: “It's difficult to say. I think clearly in those new tractions they look very strong. Some straight line speed are also interesting from a Ferrari and Mercedes, especially on new fuel.

“The problem is the assessment of the performance until we are on the same, exactly the same fuel level in qualifying in Melbourne is difficult. We see clearly some weakness on our car and we relate it to this weakness and feedback we have from Max and Isack on the car, based on where we lose that time to the others, that is why I'm saying that. Traction, low speed, medium speed corner, that was not our strength already last year. They are stronger than us.”
