Former F1 driver and GPDA chairman Alex Würz hopes that Max Verstappen will be involved in a "boring race" at the Canadian Grand Prix, saying he "cannot even think" about a potential race ban for the Dutchman. At the Spanish Grand Prix, Verstappen's collision with George Russell in the final few laps saw the four-time world champion receive three penalty points, tallying up 11 over a 12-month period.
As a result, if one more point is collected this weekend at the
Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, then the 27-year-old will face a race ban for the Austrian Grand Prix,
Red Bull Racing's home race.
There has been talk in the paddock in Montreal as to whether Verstappen's racing style will be altered to make sure he does not sit out of a Grand Prix,
but the Dutchman himself, along with
other drivers, including Lando Norris, have refuted that.
Max Verstappen will see two of his penalty points expire at the end of the Austrian Grand Prix, with the 12-month period in which points stay on drivers' licenses coming to an end then.
Wurz hoping for a 'boring race' for Verstappen
Wurz, who himself is Austrian, was asked about the potential race ban that Versappen could be faced with: "I haven't even thought about that. So, I just hope Montreal will be a boring race for Max!" the 51-year-old said to Kronen Zeitung.
"No, seriously," the Austrian continued. "I think it's already in his mind. He will start with his elbows tucked in, and if the situation calls for it, then he'll use them again and will accept the consequences."
"Still, Max is such a cold-blooded guy; he's smart enough to know how to deal with such a situation."
The GPDA chairman again emphasises that he hopes the Dutchman can keep it clean in Canada: "We all need Max and want to see him in Spielberg!"
