Mathias Lauda, the son of three-time world champion Niki, believes Max Verstappen should sit out the 2026 season.
When the son of the Austrian world champion was asked about where he thinks Verstappen will end up the next season, he told OE24: "Wow, that's tough. I don't think he knows yet. I can even imagine an entirely different scenario."
What would that different option be? Lauda explains the Dutchman should spend some more time at home.
"That Max says 'I am taking a year off. I want to enjoy my baby and spend more time at home.' During that time, he can then see who has the best package for the new regulations and then decide which seat he wants to compete for the title again. A year out would certainly do him good," he explained.

Where will Verstappen drive in 2026?

However, taking a sabbatical is not something the Dutchman is planning to do, after explaining that is not an option for him.
Verstappen wants to be active in F1 until at least the 2028 season, when his current contract with Red Bull Racing would expire. Afterwards, he would re-consider what would be his next step.
While there were many rumours about the Dutchman joining Mercedes or Aston Martin, earlier this year, GPblog could also confirm that the four-time world champion will not use his exit clause, and remain with Red Bull Racing in 2026.
