Max Verstappen explained what reminds him of himself in youngster Kimi Antonelli.

The Italian was promoted to Mercedes to replace Lewis Hamilton this season, only after a single year in F2 and skipping F3 entirely.

While Antonelli achieved his first podium at the Canadian Grand Prix, the European part of the season has been more challenging for the rookie.

He also missed out on points in Zandvoort after receiving a 10-second time penalty for causing a collision with Charles Leclerc in Turn 3, and a further five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane.

The four-time world champion appreciates Antonelli, he told GPblog in Monza.

"Is he going through a tough moment? I think it's normal what he's going through.

"The problem is that some people probably make a bit more out of it than necessary.

"That you go and make mistakes in your first season, I think it's there. It's also what I like about him, it's not like he just takes it easy or whatever," Verstappen explained.

Verstappen also joined at a young age in 2015. He was 17 when his journey in Formula 1 began with Toro Rosso (now called Racing Bulls).

The Dutchman continued: "He's in there always giving it everything, which reminds me a bit of myself.

"Can it be better? Of course, but I know how talented he is, I can see that. He just needs a bit of patience.

"I think everyone needs a little bit of patience because it's not easy to start in a top team as well.

"Of course, they are also not fighting for a lot of wins, which if you start with a great car it makes yourself also probably a bit more comfortable."

Verstappen also explained what is necessary for the young Italian. "I think he will be all right. He just needs a bit more time."
