Max Verstappen has expressed his clear opinion about cars with front-wheel drive. It is very common in road cars, unlike the sports cars that Verstappen drives, especially in Formula 1. The Dutchman has clear opinion on them.
Prior to the race weekend at the Hungaroring in Hungary, a video from Ford Performance was published, where Top Gear host Chris Harris interview the four-time world champion.
During that conversation, the reigning world champion in Formula 1 gave interesting answers to many questions. For example, he talked about getting used to new circuits. He mentioned that father Jos Verstappen had always taught him to be ready immediately.
Verstappen was asked if he likes front-wheel drive, but his answer was quite emphatic. The Red Bull Racing driver doesn't seem very fond of it. This is what he had to say. “No, I think it’s really boring. For me, it’s just like, anti-driving, you know? … I drove it sometimes on the simulator as well. For me, it’s like the worst thing ever,” Verstappen shared his verdict.
Front-wheel drive is used, among other things, because it is relatively safe. A car shows safer driving behavior more quickly if it does not have rear-wheel drive. Formula 1 cars also have the latter. This provides better acceleration, but the weight is also better distributed. The engine and gearbox are located at the back of the car, just before or above the rear axle. This makes it logical to direct the drive to the rear wheels. It is also mandatory by the FIA. A Formula 1 car may not have front-wheel drive.
