Former Formula 1 team manager Peter Windsor has reflected on Lando Norris' smash into teammate Oscar Piastri at the Canadian Grand Prix.
With a few laps to go, Norris attempted to pass his teammate for fourth place on the home straight at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. After starting from seventh, the Brit worked his way into fifth place before making a crucial mistake which cost him any chance of points in Canada.

Norris went for a gap on the straight that didn't truly exist and scraped down the pit wall before coming to a stop. He took full responsibility for the crash before swiftly making the short walk back to McLaren's motorhome.
Former Williams F1 team manager and paddock stalwart Peter Windsor has since given his insight on the crash. He gave Norris respect for his honesty after the incident but admitted that the Brit still needs an extra edge to become a world champion in Formula 1.
"He's gonna have to drive differently and approach his whole racing weekend differently if he was going to take it to Oscar Piastri," Windsor began on his YouTube channel analysis.

'No way' in the world Piastri will give Norris the position

He continued: "Oscar's got the inside run down into the last corner and there's no way in the world He's going to give that position to Lando Norris. I imagine at McLaren, they've never been in that situation before. I don't think like this at high speed, going down the straight like that between their two drivers with Oscar quite clearly racing for the position."
It is the first time championship leader Piastri and teammate Norris have come together. McLaren has always allowed their two drivers to race, but it cost them valuable points today despite their large constructor buffer out front. Windsor saw similarities in the incident with Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button's collision in almost the exact same spot at the 2011 Canadian Grand Prix.
"There's a tiny diminishing gap for Lando Norris to go on the left and it was a similar thing to Lewis Hamilton with Jenson Button as I say in the McLaren's. Lando just goes down the gap and it's as if he doesn't realize the pit wall is there. Oh, he's on the grass and suddenly hits the pit wall. Of course, the track does start to curve there as well that's the other point," Windsor explained.

Windsor respects Norris' honesty after a costly mistake

Finally, Windsor gave props to Norris for his instant honesty after the race. "I thought it was actually good how Lando reacted in that situation. Something many racing drivers in that situation who would have done that? I mean if that was Nigel Mansell or Michael Schumacher or Niki Lauda, I think they all would have found some way of blaming the other guy or the team or something.
"The first thing he does is go to Oscar and shake Oscar's hand and say look, you know, no problem, it wasn't your fault at all," Windsor concluded.
