Lando Norris clinched a hard-fought victory over home favourite Max Verstappen at Zandvoort despite a poor start. Let’s look back at last year’s Dutch Grand Prix as we wait to see who will take the win this year.
Last year’s edition saw Lando Norris line up at the front, but as often happened throughout the season, the Briton was unable to hold the lead off the line, surrendering pole to local hero Max Verstappen, who sent the crowd into a frenzy.
However, despite the poor start, it quickly became clear that the British driver and McLaren had stronger race pace.
After allowing his championship rival to set the early rhythm, Lando launched a decisive move into Turn 1 on lap 17, seizing the lead of the Grand Prix just before the first pit stop.
Meanwhile, the battle for the podium raged just behind, with George Russell, Charles Leclerc and Oscar Piastri all in the mix.
It was the Ferrari driver who came out on top, executing an undercut in the pits on lap 25 to leapfrog both rivals and rejoin the track just behind the leading pair, who by then had pulled clear.
On lap 40, Piastri managed to get past Russell, snatching fourth place and setting off in pursuit of Leclerc a few seconds ahead in the fight for the podium.
At the front, however, Norris’s advantage continued to grow inexorably, with Verstappen trailing by as much as 15 seconds with ten laps to go.
The race unfolded without further drama up to the chequered flag, with Norris sealing a dominant victory over the four-time world champion on home soil, finishing a full 22 seconds clear.
Leclerc secured third place, successfully holding off the late charge of a faster Piastri behind him, with Carlos Sainz having to settle for fifth place instead.
