General Motors has announced it has reached a major milestone in its progress towards powering the Cadillac Formula 1 team.

The American automotive manufacturer revealed that it has placed the final steel exterior beam on its new state-of-the-art facility in Concord, North Carolina.

According to the announcement, the GM Performance Power Unit (PPU) headquarters will be a two-story, 204,000-square-foot power unit development centre dedicated to designing, building, and testing the power unit for the Cadillac F1 team.

It further states that the completion of this building is expected by the end of 2026, when the Cadillac team will begin its gradual transition into a full works team by the end of the decade.

General Motors PPU CEO reacts to Cadillac power unit development progress

General Motors PPU CEO Russ O’Blenes reacted to the development process of the Cadillac team’s power unit. The head of the engine project described it as a key step forward for the Cadillac F1 effort, adding that the development will push the boundaries of innovation.

“This is a significant step forward in the Cadillac Formula 1 power unit development process. The rigorous demands of an F1 power unit push the boundaries of innovation and technology. This state-of-the-art facility will position GM PPU with the resources needed to meet those demands for the end of the decade.”

The project by General Motors is expected to create 350 high-skill, high-wage jobs, establishing the Concord region as a growing hub for motorsport innovation.

The General Motors PPU facility, along with the company’s other U.S.-based sites in Fishers, Indiana, and Detroit, will play a pivotal role in the manufacturing and development of the U.S.-based Cadillac F1 team.
