Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies believes that he is "watching history in the making" as Max Verstappen continues his improbable title comeback.
"He surprises us every time he goes out on track."- Laurent Mekies on Max Verstappen
After the summer break, the four-time world champion sat 104 points behind championship leader Oscar Piastri, winning just two races as he tried to combat a challenging RB21.
However, in just four Grand Prix weekends, that deficit has been significantly cut down to just 40 points thanks to three wins in Monza, Baku and Austin, bringing him right back into the championship fight.
"I think watching Max driving is watching history in the making," Mekies exclaimed to GPblog and others after Verstappen's imposing win at the United States Grand Prix.
"You are using the right words. He surprises us every time he goes out on track.
"He surprises us with how much he's pushing us between one session and another, how much sensitivity he has in stuff that we sometimes can see and stuff that we cannot see.
"I think watching him, watching what he is doing, it is a fair point."
Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff heaped plenty of praise on the Dutchman after his win at the Circuit of the Americas, saying that he is "as good as it gets as a driver".
With five more races to go, there are several ways the championship could go, but thanks to the Dutchman's victory in Austin, the permutations for him to take a stunning title win have become far easier.
