Red Bull’s technical director Pierre Waché analysed the challenging start to Zandvoort weekend for the Milton Keynes team, which currently looks far from being able to compete for top positions.

The first day back on track after the summer break saw Red Bull off the pace, far from the frontrunners, as was expected. Max Verstappen and Yuki Tsunoda finished the first session in sixth and sixteenth, respectively.

Things improved slightly in the afternoon, with the four-time world champion moving up to fifth, while the Japanese driver made a more significant leap in FP2, ending the session in seventh.

A result that will still require the engineers on track and at Milton Keynes to work hard overnight, in hopes of bringing an RB21 to the track tomorrow capable of at least challenging for a podium in a Grand Prix that looks set to be unpredictable weather-wise.

Waché draws initial conclusions after opening day at Zandvoort

Wrapping up the opening day of the Dutch weekend, Red Bull’s technical director Waché said: ''We had a few issues in FP1 and after that you can pick up some damage on the car and it can influence performance a little, but we have escaped any issues so far.''

''It is quite tricky here. It is very windy conditions and you have the risk of rain throughout the whole weekend. The risk is mainly for FP3, with less risk for Quali and the race, because of that we elected to go for a dry condition set-up for both cars in FP2.''

He then added: ''We evaluated things from FP1 but the wind makes it difficult here to fully assess [the] performance in the car.''

Finally, the Frenchman concluded: ''Where we are amongst the other teams is hard to say so far but we are in the mix.''

Verstappen also shared his thoughts on the outcome of the first two practice sessions. Read his reaction here.
