Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri start as underdogs compared to Lando Norris for the title, but Abu Dhabi has shown that anything can happen.
After another major blunder by McLaren, the championship fight is now more wide open than ever, with Yas Marina set to once again act as the ultimate judge in deciding the title. Norris leads the standings with a 12-point cushion over the Red Bull driver and 16 over his teammate, meaning he still fully controls his own destiny.
To secure the championship, Norris simply needs to finish in the top three to avoid relying on anyone else, while Verstappen’s focus is solely on the leader of the standings, having overtaken Piastri in Qatar.
The Dutchman would claim his fifth consecutive world championship by winning the race if Norris finishes fourth or lower, while Piastri is the underdog of the trio, needing to claw back a full sixteen points.

If Verstappen finishes second, Norris will need to come seventh or lower to still claim the title. If Verstappen takes third, Norris must finish ninth or lower, while if the Dutchman ends up off the podium, the Englishman would have to finish outside the points.
The Australian, meanwhile, must also win to maximize his chances, with his teammate needing to finish sixth or lower. If Piastri finishes second, Norris would need to come ninth or lower, while even a third-place finish would eliminate him from contention, regardless of his teammate’s result.
On paper, Norris still holds a significant advantage, but having to race against two different drivers risks a repeat of 2010, when Alonso and Webber lost the championship to the underdog Sebastian Vettel, who capitalized on their strategic mistakes.
The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix returns with its traditional weekend layout, giving teams three crucial practice sessions to sharpen car performance and strategy before the decisive moments in qualifying and the race.
Yas Marina has been the backdrop for the season finale for the past fifteen years, hosting some of the most memorable conclusions in recent Formula 1 history — from Verstappen’s dramatic victory over Lewis Hamilton in 2021 to McLaren’s last-minute clinch of the Constructors’ Championship over Ferrari last season.
Here’s everything you need to know about the weekend schedule.
