Ferrari wasn't able to deliver a podium in their home race at Monza, with Leclerc finishing in fourth position and Hamilton in sixth. Vasseur shared his thoughts about Leclerc's early battle against Piastri.

Leclerc's "second home race" started in a great way; at lights out he managed to overtake Piastri and battle with him during the first laps. However, this duel with the Australian also compromised his medium tyres, and he struggled in the first stint, even risking losing fourth position to Russell.

'It's a shame'

Vasseur told GPBlog how he thinks the duel with Piastri affected Leclerc's medium tyres: "It's very difficult to imagine what could have been the race without this. It's true that in the fight at the beginning, we were not, strangely, because he was able to overtake one or two times Piastri.

"But I think we are not in a good place. And we overrated massively the tyres and then we paid the price the next five, six laps when Russell was able to follow and the others [were able] to fly. But, okay, it is like it is."

Ferrari's team principal also apologized to the Tifosi for not being able to deliver a podium: "I think that we have to think about this what we could have been differently in the opening lap but overall I think today first [of all] it’s a shame and I'm disappointed to not be able to bring a podium to the Tifosi because when you see the pit lane and the start and finish line at the podium it would have been magic and they deserve it."
