George Russell, along with other F1 drivers, shared their thoughts following the latest meeting held to discuss racing guidelines.

"We want the best Stewards, the best racing knowledge to judge certain incidents based upon their own experience"
- George Russell

Ahead of the Qatar GP, a meeting took place between the FIA and the GPDA following some penalty decisions that sparked plenty of debate during the closing stages of the championship.

The Mercedes driver, who also serves as GPDA president, agrees with not making further changes to the guidelines before the end of the season to maintain some stability, emphasizing that they should be treated as the reference point when judging incidents.

"I think it was agreed that nothing would change for the rest of this season, which I do think is correct," he said during media day on Thursday in Abu Dhabi. "We've always asked for consistency, and it would be unfair to change that approach now. But I think the general consensus is always – guidelines need to be taken as guidelines."

Russell also once again highlighted the issue of the stewards, stressing the need for the best and most experienced panel possible.

"We want the best Stewards, the best racing knowledge to judge certain incidents based upon their own experience.

"I think that was clear when you put 20 F1 drivers in a room reviewing six or seven incidents, we all agreed upon what the penalty should have been or not, regardless of what the guidelines said. I hope there's a follow-up and look forward to hearing what they're thinking ahead of 2026."

FIA considers major breakthrough in the use of stewards in Formula 1

The FIA is sticking with a rotating system for stewards, rejecting permanent appointments due to concerns over potential bias. This approach is set to continue into 2026.

At the same time, the governing body is exploring ways to professionalize the role, including the possibility of paying stewards or hiring full-time professionals, as is common in other sports.

Right now, stewards receive only a small expense allowance, a model that’s unusual in top-tier sports. Offering salaries could encourage more former drivers to take on the role, instead of opting for media careers.
