Norris wins from a relentless Piastri as Leclerc's Ferrari miracle turns sour

Lando Norris wins the Hungarian Grand Prix ahead of Oscar Piastri and George Russell in P3.

How it happened

The race started with Charles Leclerc keeping the lead getting a good start off the line ahead of Oscar Piastri who pushed Lando Norris to the edge of the track to protect his P2.

This move saw the Briton take the inside line going into Turn one, with George Russell and Fernando Alonso overtaking Norris around the outside at the first corner.

Max Verstappen dropped a place to Liam Lawson, but he regained it with an incisive move into Turn 6 on lap 2, as Norris overtook Alonso for P4 into Turn 1 on lap 3. Verstappen repeated his previous move at Turn 6 on Lance Stroll for P7 on lap 3.

On lap 5 Gabriel Bortoleto as he was enduring the pressure from the 4-time world champion, he was noted by the Stewards for having moved before the starting signal. Nico Hulkenberg was noted for the same incident the following lap.

On lap 7 Isack Hadjar reached out to his team on the onboard radio saying his hand had received the full impact of gravel that had been kicked up, injuring him in the process.

On lap 10 a penalty was issued for Hulkenberg for moving before the start signal.

First round of pitstops and Piastri's frustrated undercut and Verstappen's complaints

On the following lap Leclerc took to the onboard radio to inquire Ferrari regarding an issue related to engine cuts that he was experiencing at the moment.

On lap 14 Franco Colapinto pulled the trigger and came into the pits for a set of hard tyres. The following lap Alexander Albon and Esteban Ocon followed suit for medium and hard tyres respectively. Carlos Sainz pitted one lap after that.

On lap 17 Piastri was given the green light to unleash full race pace and set out on the hunt for race leader Leclerc. On that same lap Verstappen then pitted for hard tyres.

Piastri was then called into the pits on lap 18 as Norris was told that his pitstop would be moved up by 5 laps, which the Brit welcomed as his tyres 'were gone.'

On lap 19 Leclerc and Russell were called into the pits, with the Monegasque successfully covering Piastri off. This left Norris and Alonso in the virtual lead followed by Leclerc, Piastri and Bortoleto who'd yet to make his pitstop.

Leclerc and Piastri quickly overtook Alonso, as Verstappen continued his charge amid his complaints of Red Bull's strategy call to pit him into traffic, clearing Hulkenberg at Turn 6 and Pierre Gasly on the ooutside of Turn 2.

Leclerc's warnings to Ferrari and Norris' gamble and Verstappen-Hamilton's near crash

From a 12 second gap over Leclerc and Piastri, it closed up to just over 5 seconds, as Norris was told that the one stopper was a-go.

Verstappen on lap 30 then made a daring move on Hamilton into Turn 4 that forced the Briton wide to avoid a potential collision. P11 for the Dutchman who then set on the charge to take Hadjar, which he did into Turn 6, moving him into P10, leaving him on the hunt of Oliver Bearman in P9.

The Haas British driver then pitted releasing Verstappen to chase down Liam Lawson 12 seconds ahead. Norris pitted for hard tyres on lap 32, covering off Fernando Alonso on pit exit.

The incident between Verstappen and Hamilton was noted on the same lap as Piastri was in hot pursuit of Leclerc for the race lead. The near crash then was put under investigation by the Stewards.

As Alonso pitted on lap 40, Piastri was called into the pits, but Leclerc jumped the gun and came into the pitst for another set of hard tyres, releasing Piastri into clean air, with Russell in P2 ahead of Norris in P3.

The race comes to an end and the winner of the Hungarian GP is revealed

Norris chased down Russell as Leclerc worked hard to close the 6 seconds gap. The Mercedes British driver then pitted for hard tyres on lap 44, which unleashed Norris 10 seconds behind teammate and race leader Piastri.

On lap 51 Piastri made the move on Leclerc for P2 and set about hunting down Norris with 18 laps to go. In the lead the Briton was told that in the case of a safety car McLaren would opt for hards, since they'd only lose out to Piastri. He immediately rebuked the call and called for soft tyres.O

On lap 61 after a frustrated overtake attempt on Leclerc, Russell was prompted to complain on the radio after claiming the Monegasque had moved under braking.

The next lap going into Turn 1 Leclerc did move his Ferrari under braking, nearly colliding with Russell, which brought about a rather distressed radio call from the Briton urging for the Ferrari to be penalised for the on-the-limit move.

On lap 65 Piastri clawed his way back to Norris' tail, as the Brit complained about the backmarkers potentially ruining his race.

On lap 69 Piastri attempted a hai Mary late lunge which prompted a lock-up by the Australian driver, and a call from the McLaren pitbox to remeber how 'they go racing.'
