Ralf Schumacher was complimentary of George Russell after the Briton won in Canada, however, one moment did led to the Mercedes driver receiving some criticism. Starting from pole position, Russell remained in control at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, and won his fourth Grands Prix ever.
Schumacher, who has often been critical of Russell, was complimentary of Russell, he said in the Backstage Boxengasse podcast of Sky Sports Germany.
“We have often said that he makes mistakes, but at the moment he is not making any, and he has fully embraced his role as team leader and is always performing,” the former driver began.
“What he did was fantastic. He is a bit of a gentleman, or at least he acts like one, always so well-dressed. People at Mercedes-Benz say internally that it's a bit boring, but I actually think it's pretty cool.”
George Russell has bitten back against Verstappen
Schumacher sees Russell stepping out of his role
Behind the Safety Car, Russell did step on the brakes hard on the back straight, so
Max Verstappen would pass him, leading to the Dutchman getting penalised. Red Bull also protested the incident so Russell would be penalised, but the Briton could keep his victory.
“What he did there was of course show that he knew the rules, that he could do it too, but it was a close call. I don't think it really suits him. Yes, he used the rules to his advantage, but not even Max Verstappen would do something like that. He does it a bit more elegantly,” the former Williams and Toyota driver said about the incident.
Schumacher also believes Russell sent a message to Verstappen. “He has now shown: ‘Watch out, Max. I am also someone who wants to win at all costs, who will do everything, by all means necessary. You are not the only one on the field,’” the German concluded.
